When we talk about growth—whether it’s physical, emotional, spiritual, or personal—it rarely happens in isolation. The truth is, the people you surround yourself with matter more than you might realize. They don’t all need to look or think the same. In fact, it’s often their differences that bring you the support, perspective, and motivation you need to reach the goals you set for yourself.
This week, I hit a big personal milestone: I ran 10 miles.
It took me over a month of focused training, but even more than that, it took a strong and supportive circle. I leaned on different people in different ways—friends who run regularly served as inspiration, helping me stay focused and offering advice when I hit mental roadblocks. My sister checked in with me along the way. And my husband? He ran 4.5 of those miles by my side.
That run didn’t just feel like a personal win—it was a shared one. Every text message, every check-in, every mile someone else logged before me helped me get across my own finish line.
It’s a reminder that the people around us are deeply connected to the goals we’re able to reach. Whether it’s fitness, faith, or home improvement, we grow better when we grow together.
A couple other goals I set this year include volunteering at my church and redoing the hallway in my home. Both of those goals were made possible not just because I wanted them, but because I had people in my life who made them real. I met others at church who inspired me to get involved, and now I’m volunteering at events that genuinely align with my purpose. And my dad? He stepped in with advice and guidance to help me get started on the hallway project I’ve been putting off.
It’s easy to think success is all about willpower, but in reality, it’s about connection. It’s about letting the people in your life show up for you in small and big ways—and being willing to show up for them too.
So if you’re chasing a goal, remember this: You don’t have to do it alone. In fact, you’re not supposed to. Let your circle be a part of your journey. Lean on them, learn from them, and celebrate with them.
Because when you’re surrounded by people who are committed to growing, evolving, and showing up—your life naturally starts to do the same.
Let this be a reminder to check in with your people. Invest in your relationships. And keep building a circle that reflects the kind of life you want to live.
B. Congrats on the 10 miler. Another great post.
